About the Company: Baby Sabye is a company from Bangkok/Thailand and is known for producing completely natural handmade products. Their aim is to support the traditional weavers community in Thailand. The carriers are made of local harvest cotton and dyed with 100% natural colours (plant dyes).

My first impression

The Baby Sabye Meh Dai is a traditional Meh Dai, kept easy but still offers slight adjustments on the base, length and neck. It comes with a head support and wide shoulder straps. There’s no padding at all and the hip belt is rather narrow compared to what we might be used with other carriers.
The material feels thin, lightweight and rather rough but gets a bit smoother by wearing it. The colours are natural and the variegated dye gives every Meh Dai a unique and vivid look.

How to adjust

The seat is easily adjustable by cord but because the back panel is completely sewn on the hip belt, there will be pleads in the fabric when you’re narrowing the seat too much. This is why there are different sizes available – baby, standard and toddler. If you need a shorter back panel, just wear the Meh Dai apron style. With the legs of your baby or toddler growing, you can also use the wide shoulder straps as seat extenders. Support your childs neck with the cord and use the head support if necessary, e.g. when your baby’s asleep.

How does it fit and wear

Although there’s no padding and the hipbelt is rather narrow, the Baby Sabye Meh Dai feels really comfy. The weight distribution is great with the wide shoulder straps and I was able to carry my daughter high enough. As you can see the back panel is quite long which means I will be able to carry her for a while and she’ll still be supported enough. The only thing that some might find bothering is that the carrier is reversible but on one side of the back panel, there’s the cord and it might disturb your child if worn inside… I can’t say something about the practicability and support with a newborn. Usually, a baby wrap is the best choice during the first months. Baby wraps are also available at Baby Sabye.

Conclusion…

We both enjoyed this carrier. I love the look of it as well as the philosophy behind in supporting local handcrafters. Often I prefer when carriers are as simple as this one. It’s always a fast up this way with a minimum of adjusting. Bonus: with as less material as possible, the Meh Dai fits in my back pack and is always at hand if my daughter doesn’t want to walk anymore… 🙂
