Nestwärme: How popular is babywearing in your country?
Bernadett Berecz: Babywearing is quite popular in Hungary and fortunately the interest is continuously growing.

Why did you want to become a babywearing consultant and which school did you visit?
I decided to become a babywearing consultant just after my second child was born and I realised I could not live without a wrap. I carried my first child as well but having my second one as a newborn and a jealous first born 3 years old seemed unmanageable without babywearing. I was so grateful for having a tool to solve my life and make it not only survivable but even very enjoyable, happy and social. I decided to take the course and become a babywearing consultant to pass this bless on to other parents as well, regardless of which aspect of babywearing they want to benefit from. I learnt babywearing at Beli Buba Babywearing School, Budapest, so I took its course to be certified as a consultant in 2009. Later on I joined the managerial board of this babywearing school in 2015.

How important is it for you and/or your clients to wear babys ergonomically?
The ergonomic positioning is very important for me and for almost all the carrying parents in Hungary, which is excellent. Most babywearers are aware for their babies health in the wrap or carrier, so most Hungarians choose a carrier or a carrying position in the wrap which provides the ergonomic positions for both the hip and the spine of the baby.

How many parents are you „teaching“ per month?
I give about 6 consultations per month as an average, plus helping those families who come to our local babywearing groupmeetings held once a month.

What’s the thing, most parents ask or have trouble with concerning babywearing?
Most parents in my practice struggle to find the best carrier for them. Many new parents are discouraged to use wraps by thinking the difficulty of tying, and then feel lost in the growing supply of the different types and brands of carriers on the market. We consultants help parents and caregivers to find the type of carrier which fits best to their lifestyle, personality, expectations, or sometimes (dis)abilities.

How big is your « consultancy stash »?
Most of my clients like the wrap conversions and Mei Tais the best. Many parents prefer full buckles (SSCs) made by Hungarian WAHMs (work-at-home-mums), because they are tailored to their size, needs and styles. The really “hardcore” babywearers still prefer the wraps and slings.

What’s the word for babywearing in your language?
Babywearing in Hungarian is “babahordozás“, which means babycarrying if mirror translated.
